In 1962, the Guild, in partnership with the Society for Theatre Research, held a festival in Covent Garden celebrating Punch and Judy’s 300th anniversary. The location was chosen for its historical significance, as it was near St Paul’s Church that Mr Punch’s puppet show was first recorded in England, witnessed by Samuel Pepys in his diary in 1662. To commemorate the occasion, this plaque on the church was created and unveiled and remains there to this day.
